DGC Open: This one’s for the family, Shankar Das on mini comeback

Shankar Das is showing signs of returning to form with the strong start to The DGC Open.

Shankar Das will quietly tell you that the rather long run in the wilderness has been a test of patience.

Coping with medical and ensuing financial problems at home, Shankar endured a lot, and it reflected in the poor run on Tour.

But as it goes, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. A sponsor is on board since January, and Shankar attributes the sense of calm to benefactor Piyush Saraf and his firm Powertech Global Pvt Ltd.

There has been activity on the personal front as well. Son Shubhankar has been making father do the hard yards on the treadmill and other gym equipment the family has assembled at home.

Shubhankar is a budding athlete but the focus is on Shankar. “My son said I need to regain form and for that I have been working out hard,” said Shankar.

These are early days but perhaps the results have started to trickle in. A top-10 in Bangladesh and in joint lead on Day 1 of The DGC Open, Shankar feels he is ready to repose the family’s faith.
