In sport, the time away is often a bigger teacher than lessons during the course of play.

Shiv Kapur pulled out just 20 minutes before tee-off at the Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational in October with a broken rib.

Sitting out for two months, Shiv got to sample what post-retirement life can be.

“It can come anytime,” he says, and going with it, Shiv introspected when not spending time with the family.

Watching the action from the sidelines gave perspective but also whetted the appetite for real-time action.

On Wednesday and Thursday, it was as if Shiv was never away, rolling in the putts to be one off the lead after Day 2 of the TATA Steel Tour Championship despite not being fully healed.

A free mind = good golf

A tentative mind often leads to uncertainty on the turf. Chikka’s recent run on Tours was about the anxiety of sealing his card on the Asian Tour.

The objective was attained in Indonesia earlier this month with the T28 securing 2023.

The mind freed, Chikka’s golf was expressive too. A T14 last week and Kolkata, and five off the lead at the TATA Steel Tour Championship, Chikka has thrown his hat in the season finale.
