Practice or tournament, going low is what drives Karan Taunk

Given golf’s fickleness, Karan Taunk may or may not win the Players Championship.

Six off the lead, he could catch up if this week’s trend of the birdies outnumbering bogeys continues. But then the dropped shots, though far less than he is known to shoot, have hurt as well.

But for them, Karan would have gone into the final day at the Coimbatore Golf Club much better placed than 9th. He is aware, but there is also the realization that the rewards of raising the bar at practice are showing up slowly.

Karan recently shot 12-under at Golmuri, one of his home courses in Jamshedpur, and the round was dotted with 10 birdies and an eagle. The target when he tees off these days is nothing less than 3-under, and though Karan knows that putting in a settled environment and sinking the putts under tournament pressure is different, the signs are right.
