Cameron Young kept his status intact on the leaderboard at sole second after Round 3 of The Genesis Invitational. Going into Sunday three off the lead, Young seeks a breakthrough on the PGA Tour. Excerpts
You said you’ve been playing well but you feel like you haven’t — but haven’t really been able to get much out of your game. Do you feel like you’re getting more this week?
Cameron Young: Yeah, for sure. Today I didn’t get the most out of it, but I didn’t get the least either. Obviously I didn’t play as well as I did yesterday, I didn’t play as well as I did on Thursday, but to get out of there a couple under par is never a bad day. So happy I was able to kind of get it down there at the end.

Too early to be looking at leaderboards, you weren’t really paying attention to it?
Young: Yeah, I did. It’s hard not to notice when you look at him running away from everybody. He (Joaquin Niemann) was 5 under through 10 when he made two on 10. At 21 under with an eight or whatever shot lead over third? Honestly, I was playing okay. I mean, I was 2 under, 3 under through 10 and he was running away from me. Yeah, hard not to notice. I know Viktor (Hovland) kind of got up there at some point. I was looking at it all, I like to know where I stand.

How do you explain the kind of strange leaderboard this week not in terms of who’s there, but one guy at 19, one guy at 16? Is there something about this course that separates people?
Young: Yeah, I don’t know. Yeah, it’s certainly a place that you have to play really well to post a good score and I think Joaquin, he’s made a bunch of putts. He’s playing awesome golf and it’s rewarding. If you’re in the right places and you’re making putts when you have opportunities, you can shoot a lot under and I think he’s proven that to us all. It’s a hard golf course, but if you’re on top of it, you can shoot a low score.

Do you feel like you’re in good position now?
Young: Yeah, of course. Anytime you start Sunday three back, whether you’re in tenth or second, you have a chance. Anybody out here can shoot 8 or 9 under and you just never know when it’s going to be you on a Sunday.
If not for that bunker at 16, you’re right there, huh?
Young: Yeah. I’m still right there, I’ve only got one guy ahead of me. He’s a great player and I know he’s playing really well, but you just never know what can happen. Tomorrow that three shots can be gone in a hole and three shots can go the other way in a hole, so we’ll just have to see.
