Russia’s loss has become India’s gain. The 44th Chess Olympiad, moved out of Russia amidst sanctions due to the attack on Ukraine, will now the staged in Chennai.
The chess capital of India is all set to host the Chess Olympiad this year. The development has been confirmed by the All-India Chess Federation and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin, via their verified social media handles. Speculation was rife about India getting to host the Chess Olympiad after the AICF had reportedly furnished a bank guarantee of $10 million to the world chess governing body – FIDE.

Tamil Nadu State has been instrumental in securing the hosting rights of the biggest chess competition. “Delighted that the Chess Capital of India is set to host the 44th Chess Olympiad! A proud moment for Tamil Nadu! Chennai warmly welcomes all the Kings and Queens from around the world! #ChessOlympiad2022,” tweeted Stalin.
AICF too confirmed the news on its official twitter handle: “It’s official now….India will host the 44th World Chess Olympiad 2022 at Chennai!”
India has committed Rs 75 crore to host the chess event, biggest since the Vishwanathan Anand-Magnus Carlsen match in 2013.
The AICF has earned the right to host the Olympiad via a bid process after Russia was denied the right to stage the mega event from July 26 to August 8.
