When Sachin Baisoya got an invitation from Harendra Gupta to spend time in Chandigarh, he sensed an opportunity to learn and get better under the senior pro. It wasn’t as if Sachin was short of inspiration at the Delhi Golf Club, but when he looks back, that prolonged grind at the Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) was preparation for the biggest week of his short pro career.
From the summer of 2018 to getting back to base just before the pandemic set in last year, Sachin became familiar with the CGC in a way that he can now reel off strategy and club selection on each hole. Emerging from a not-so good season, Sachin had hoped to make amends in 2020 but that was not to be. The lockdown hit his ilk hard and impacted Sachin in a way he hadn’t imagined. A road accident left him with a torn forearm that had to be sewed up. Less than weeks away from restart on the Professional Golf Tour of India, Sachin teed off virtually unprepared. Though the start wasn’t bad, the rustiness showed.

Unsure, Sachin was looking at two of the season’s biggest events in December 2020. First up, was the Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational. The start at CGC was poor, but familiarity kicked in and Sachin finished the week sole seventh. He has had better results on Tour, but the cheque of Rs 3,75,375 is his biggest and priceless in these times. For this, Sachin is thankful for Harendra’s astute guidance and his ability to soak in the advice.
