Germany’s Briem, who won the 2024 La Sella Open, had seven birdies and two bogeys on her scorecard on the first day of action.
“I think my day was really solid, I improved my putting and my wedges,” said the 19-year-old. “I had many birdie chances and used many of them, so I’m really happy with them.
“I didn’t hit too many drivers; I hit a couple of 4-irons off the tee. I still have some longer clubs in the bag off the tee. I worked yesterday with my coach on my approach shots, I think we figured it out pretty well and I was able to stick them close today, so I’m happy about that.
“It’s the first time I have been here. It’s a home tournament, but there are many LET courses which are closer to home.”
It was a bogey-free day in Hamburg for Hewson, who rolled in birdies at the fourth, fifth, seventh, 11th and 12th holes.

“It was just really solid today, it’s not playing easy,” said the two-time LET winner. “We’re expecting some weather over the next couple of days as well, so we were lucky to have a couple of tees forward and make the most of that.
“I played really solidly; I hit a lot of greens – I only had to chip twice – so I’m very happy. We definitely got lucky; this is not the weather we were expecting. We had a couple of showers out there, but overall, nothing too heavy.
“It’s not quite been the start to the season that I’ve been hoping for. I’ve got a lot of stuff going on off the golf course and I’m just keeping my head down and working through it. This year is one of those years where life is catching up and getting in the way a little bit, golf is still the priority and I’m still grinding to give it everything every week.”
LET rookie Garvey only had one dropped shot during her first round with birdies at holes four, eight, 11, 13, 16, and 17 to also be tied at the top.
“It was great,” said the New Zealander. “I looked at the weather today and saw a few tees were up and that I needed to take advantage of a morning round with pretty still conditions.
“That’s exactly what I did, I was patient out there as well and didn’t get too greedy on some holes. Unfortunately, one bogey on the last but I’d take five-under if you told me that this morning.
“I managed to take advantage still, I stayed aggressive with some lines with the forward tees and had flick wedges in which I was able to give myself a lot of birdie opportunities. This course tomorrow could be a completely different day, I think it will be. It’s nice to get that under the belt and have a really good start.
“I have always loved hitting stingers, so using my 2-iron is my go-to shot off the tee. It’s a bit of a fairway finder, and you need to be on the fairways here so I’ve been using that a lot today and will do going forward.”

Sweden’s Südow also produced a round of 68 (-5) which included three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey on the front nine; however, on her back nine, the Swede had a flawless nine holes with birdies at 10, 11, 14, 15 and 18.
“I am just so happy that I made so many birdies,” said the Swede. “It’s a very tough course, it’s brutal, so I was just plotting my way around the course and made some birdies. It was fun.
“My approaches were good; I got a lot of good looks today. It’s golf, so I was lucky getting my favourite yardages over and over. That makes golf easier, so I got pretty close. The last two weeks have been pretty good making a lot of birdies and I’m feeling pretty confident overall in my game.
“It’s really fun to actually go out and do it too. I told my coach I’m pretty confident in my abilities now, but then this course is really scary, so I said I didn’t know what was going to happen here. If someone on the first tee had told me I’d have a round of two-over, I’d have taken and run with it. I’m very happy with five-under.”
Four players are in a share of fifth place with Czechia’s Patricie Mackova, English duo Hannah Screen and Bronte Law, and India’s Diksha Dagar all on four-under-par.
One shot further back in T9 is the sextet of Singapore’s Shannon Tan, Ireland’s Anna Foster, Australia’s Kelsey Bennett, France’s Anne-Charlotte Mora, and Danish pair Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen and Natacha Host Husted.
