The 33-year-old began the day five shots adrift of overnight leaders Bernd Wiesberger and Shaun Norris, but carded an eagle, four birdies and a bogey on his front nine to sit three off the pace.

Four birdies down the stretch reduced the deficit even further, Otaegui reaching 16 under par to shoot his lowest round of the year to date and move into pole position ahead of Sunday.

The 40-year-old navigated some tricky pins to register four birdies and a bogey on his opening nine holes, while his back nine saw him even par – he picked up a shot at the tenth before dropping it again at the 15th.

Wiesberger finished the day 15 under par, three shots ahead of playing partner Norris, who recorded a 71.

Zihao Jin and Bo Peng are the best of the strong Chinese contingent on home soil, both sitting in a group of six at eight under par.

Player quotes

Adrian Otaegui: It’s been a very nice day. It’s been a bit off everything. I started very nicely with a very good birdie on the first, then a beautiful hole out on hole four for eagle. I just played very well on the front nine, finished the front nine with three birdies, as well, for five under. Then I just kept going.

I made some very nice birdies on 10 and 11, three footers, and had a very good save on 12 – 12 is challenging, went into the bunker on the left, and made a very nice up and down there. Then I had a very nice chip in, as well, on 16. And 17, 18 was a bit of a fight, but I managed to save a very nice par on 17, which almost felt like a birdie. I was a bit lucky with the tee shot on 17, but I hit a very, very good lay up there, which allowed me to go for the pin and have a birdie chance, which I made, so it was a very, very positive day. I’m very happy with the way I finish as well and the way I stayed patient.

You know how golf is, every day is different. My game’s good. I’ve been playing good. I have been putting well and I am confident, so all I want to do is keep going, keep doing the same and give myself a chance for tomorrow.
