Once the glare dies down and the family settles in, the Kochhar are bound to go back in time and revisit those moments that led parents, Reshma and Sandeep, and Karandeep decide where the boy’s future lay. After near misses — @kkooch62 finished runner-up thrice among 11 top-10s @pgtitour in a pro career that spans less than four seasons, the faith was vindicated on the 18th green of the Chandigarh Golf Club on Thursday. This is where the 21-year-old grew up and by 15 was certain that his calling lay in making putts for gains.

Of course, Karandeep’s success early on as a junior and amateur made it easier for the family to arrive at a consensus despite the mother’s initial apprehension. When Karandeep notched his first pro at Kolkata in 2016 as an amateur everyone was on the same page.

As the final putt went in at the Players Championship, among the flood of emotions that swept through Karandeep, one was of gratitude to Reshma, a teacher, who allowed her son to opt out of academics after completing school and rushed him to practice after getting back from her counsellor’s job at a school.

Karandeep stays appreciative of the win in Kolkata as it had to do with the quality field he encountered every week, and has got him better. As leader of the pack there were bound to be nerves on Thursday but Karandeep’s endeavour was aided by the parents’ presence, and that helped as he handled himself better than last week in Panchkula.
