As Mumbai coped with unprecedent monsoon fury and misery last year, this feature is a salute to the undying spirit of a Mumbaikar. Anil Bajrang Mane Whatsapp DP features his son Yashwant with a line “I love my children”. Yashwant was six when he lost the fight to dengue in 2016 and Mane was in between tournaments on the @pgtitour.
The pain lingers and the few junior clubs in a corner of their Chembur home remind Mane and wife Laxmi of the loss. When lockdown brought life to a standstill and his savings dried up, Mane, who has been a professional golfer for 11 years and has several top-10s and began 2020 on a strong note, took up work as a daily wager at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club and then practiced by the railway tracks near his home.

The climbdown was to support the family and education of daughters Priyanka, 15, Asha, 13, and Charulata, 12. Son Jayesh, 3, will join his sisters in some time. For eight hours and Rs 800 everyday, Mane got the fairways ready as his home course readies for reopening. This supplemented the monetary support from club members and the Chembur Golf Welfare Foundation and helped steady the Mane household somewhat.
