Late flurry has Munoz sit pretty at John Deere Classic

Sebastian Munoz birdies his last five holes, Nos. 14-18 en route an 8-under 63, his lowest round of the season on Day One of the John Deere Classic on Thursday.

Co-leader Chesson Hadley also got his lowest score on the PGA Tour since 2017.

Eleven players completed their round bogey-free, including Hadley, Camilo Villegas and Chez Reavie.

A week after winning his first PGA Tour title, Australia’s Cam Davis opens with a 67 to lie four off the lead. Arjuna Atwal and Anirban Lahiri had sedate starts and were T102 with even-par rounds.

Munoz’s best finish of four previous 18-hole leads/co-leads on Tour was T3/2017 A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier.

He is seeking a second career Tour title and first since a playoff victory at the 2019 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Hadley is making his fifth start in the John Deere Classic and the ,bogey-free 8-under 63 was his lowest score since a career-low 11-under 61 in Round Two of the 2017 Fortinet Championship (T3).

He takes an 18-hole lead/co-lead on Tour for a second time (2018 The Players Championship/T11).

His best finish in four previous John Deere Classic starts was T25 in 2017.

His lone top-10 finish this season on Tour was T2 at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree in June.

Daniel Berger, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 16 in the Official World Golf Ranking, opened his third John Deere Classic with a 2-under 69 (T52); finished T5 in 2017 and T33 in 2019.

The John Deere Classic is the final event of The Open Qualifying Series USA, offering one spot to the leading player (not otherwise exempt) who finishes among the top five and ties.

There are 13 players competing this week also scheduled to compete in next week’s Open Championship at Royal St. George’s Golf Club: Byeong Hun An (71), Daniel Berger (69), Rafa Cabrera Bello (70), Lucas Glover (68), Brian Harman (70), Russell Henley (67), Zach Johnson (68), Danny Lee (69), Keith Mitchell (68), Sebastian Munoz (63), Alex Noren (70), C.T. Pan (68), Chez Reavie (64).
