Women power to the fore for India at Tokyo Olympics

August 2, 2021 will be etched in India’s sporting history. For the first time, the Indian women’s hockey time qualified for the semis at the Olympics by defeating three-time gold medallists Australia 1-0. Gurjit Kaur scored the crucial goal to storm as India stormed into the semis where will they face Argentina. The highlight throughout the match was India’s stout defending in the face of repeated Aussie onslaughts.

In equestrian, Fouaad Mirza he made an impressive debut at Tokyo 2020. Mirza and his horse Seigneur Medicott finished 23rd overall in eventing after being one of the 25 from the field of 63 who qualified for the final. Germany’s Julia Krajewski, with her horse Amande De B’Neville, became the first woman Olympic gold medallist in eventing with a score of 26.00.ed

Kamalpreet Kaur also failed to win a medal on Monday but not before making an impression. With a best of 63.70 metres in a rain-interrupted final in discus throw, she finished sixth among the 12 finalists.

Dutee Chand failed to qualify for the women’s 200m semis. She recorded her best time of 23.85 but it was not enough to get her into the semi-finals. Shelly-Ann Frasher-Pryce topped Heat 5 with a timing of 10.84 while Ajla del Ponte finished second with a timing of 10.91.
