Aarav Shah emerges men’s champ at Bangladesh Amateur

Aarav Shah is a picture of triumph after his win at the Orion 36th Bangladesh Amateur Championship on Saturday.

Young Aarav Shah punched above his weight and beat an experienced field to win the men’s individual title at the Orion 36th Bangladesh Amateur Championship.

Shooting another 70 at the par-72 Kurmitola Golf Club, Aarav, who holds an Australian passport but trains in India, won by two shots with a final tally of 4-under 284 (70, 74, 70, 70).

Overnight leader Subash Tamang of Nepal was let down by a final day 75 and finished with a tally of 2-under 286 (72, 66, 73, 75).

Home boy Shafiqul Islam was third with a four-day total of 2-over 290 (72, 73, 72, 73).

Sonya Akhtar brought cheer for home fans as she shot 73 to take the ladies’ individual title with a 36-hole total of 8-over 152 (79, 73) by 4 shots. Pakistan’s Suneyah Osama 156 (79, 77) and Bangladesh’s Nasima Akhter 163 (86, 77) were next in the order.

There was some consolation for Subash Tamang as he teamed up with Sadbhav Acharya to eke out a two-shot win in the men’s team event. The duo totalled 292, two better than Bangladesh B, comprising Shafiqul Islam and Liton Mondal. Bangladesh A finished third at 297, courtesy the efforts of Shahabuddin and Md Sumon.
