The 39-year-old’s triumph came almost ten years to the day since his maiden DP World Tour title, which also came at the Volvo China Open, as he made it a week to remember for the home fans in China’s most populous city.

This week’s event in Hainan marks a milestone moment for the DP World Tour, as the Hainan Classic becomes the 50th DP World Tour event to be held in China. Over the past three decades, Golf’s Global Tour has been a regular visitor to the country, starting with the BMW Asian Open in 2004.

The Hainan Classic is the first official DP World Tour event to be held on Hainan Island, but Mission Hills Haikou has previously hosted the 2011 World Cup of Golf, which was won by American duo Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland, as well as the World Ladies Championship and the biennial World Celebrity Pro-Am, which was won in 2016 by Haotong Li.
