Four seasons on the Japan Golf Tour, Rahil Gangjee has adjusted to the conditions different to what he encounters in India and the Asian Tour to the extent that he has a win against his name here. The super-fast greens are to his liking and so are the pristine golf courses, and he wouldn’t trade them for anything.

What he still can’t fathom is the sudden drop in temperature. That’s a Kolkatan true to his roots and one who “grew up in 90% humidity levels and 40 degree Celsius”. Day Three of the Asia Pacific Diamond Cup was extremely windy coupled with tough pin positions, but our man in Japan performed admirably to come up with a round of two-under 70. Not only did it get him up the leaderboard but also in the ideal frame of mind to launch an assault on the final day on Sunday.

In a happy space and frame of mind, Rahil chose to do Saturday’s session outside his hotel lobby instead from the room. He gave us a glimpse of the street that houses the Ramen joint he has frequented this week, but also pointed in the direction of the fast-food joint that was the venue for buddy Shaun Norris’ birthday bash on Tuesday. It was a small but happy and noisy gathering that bonded over fudge cake.
