As the year draws to a close, amateur Milind Soni can look back at 2021 with some fondness.
Not only did the 16-year-old continue to make a mark on the Indian Golf Union’s national amateur circuit, but the biggest takeaway for him from this COVID-disrupted season was also his first overseas trip for the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Dubai in early November.

But the start to the week at the Dubai Creek Golf Club was anything was favourable as Milind went down with a bout of food poisoning and could only tee off on the opening day due to a late tee-off time.
It was an exhibition of gritty golf as Milind carded a creditable 71 and followed with rounds of 69 and 71 with a body that was crying out for rest, but was held together by a mind that refused to give up.

But for the final day 76, which saw him plunge 17 spots, Milind could have finished much better than sole 41st and 3-over 287.
Nevertheless, the lessons from the week, particularly making cut in that state, will stay for long as Milind strives to get better.
