The 31-year-old, who outplayed Yuwa Kosaihira in a playoff to win the title last year, is upbeat about his chances at the JPY 100,000,000 tournament which starts on Thursday.

“I arrived in Haneda yesterday and came straight here. I don’t feel too tired. There’s some jet lag, but I didn’t play much golf last week, so physically I feel fine,” said Kozuma.

“I have been feeling good about my shots. There was a period where things weren’t great, especially around my last tournament, but last week I felt much better, so it feels like my game is improving again.”

Reflecting on his season, which included eight starts on LIV Golf, Kozuma said: “I had some worries because of my injury, but surprisingly I was able to play in a good state. Considering I was injured, I think I managed well. The pain isn’t completely gone, but with training and treatment, I’m in good condition.”

As he returns to familiar surroundings at Keya Golf Club, Kozuma praised the tournament’s vibrant atmosphere.

“With the music and energy here, it feels close to LIV. It allows me to focus without unnecessary distractions.”

While admitting his LIV future is still uncertain, he shared he has made other plans to his schedule.

“Like last year, I haven’t received confirmation for next season yet. I’m planning to go through LIV Qualifying and have already scheduled it. I also want to play on the Asian Tour, starting from early October after taking a two-to-three week break once this event finishes.”

Despite the challenges, he remains proud of his progress. “Of course, there are areas I could have done better, but overall I’m satisfied with how the season turned out. Playing on LIV these past two years has definitely helped raise the level of my game. Competing at that level naturally improves you.”

But turning his attention to the week and with his title defence on the line, Kozuma is fully focused on achieving his goal.

“I want to win again. I want to defend my title.”
