Niemann marches on in Riviera smashing records en-route

Joaquin Niemann (1st) 126 (-16) set the 36-hole scoring record at The Genesis Invitational and improved his previous-low 36-hole total by one stroke (127/2019 A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier).

Marked his ninth career round of 63 or better and his first time shooting back-to-back rounds of 63 or better. He is making fourth consecutive start at The Genesis Invitational (T44/2019, MC/2020, T43/2021).

He has posted 17 birdies or better, a career-high through 36 holes (previous best, 15/2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions).

Niemann holds the 36-hole lead/co-lead for the fourth time on PGA Tour (2018 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday/T6, 2019 A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier/Won, 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic/T2).

He earned his first career Tour victory at the 2019 A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier.

He has two top-10s in seven starts this season (T5/World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, T6/Farmers Insurance Open.

Cameron Young (2nd/-14) shots a 29 (-6) on inward nine, including birdies on last four holes (Nos. 6-9) for 9-under 62 in his first appearance at The Genesis Invitational. The 62 marks his career low round on Tour (34 rounds).

Only other 29 on Riviera’s front nine in the last decade belongs to Dustin Johnson (R3/2018).

Young is the first player to birdie holes 6, 7, 8 and 9 in The Genesis Invitational since Mark O’Meara (1992).

Ranks No. 1 in par-3 scoring average this week (2.50).

He posted T2 at the 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship for his lone top-10 in 11 previous starts on Tour.

Justin Thomas (3rd/-11) notched his 58th bogey-free round on Tour. The 64 marked his 39th round of 7-under or better on Tour, the most of any player since the start of the 2015 season.

2020 Genesis Invitational champion Adam Scott (T4/-9) went bogey free en-route his fourth round of 65 or better at this event (50 rounds).

Jordan Spieth (T4/-9) reached 10-under when he chipped in for eagle at the par-5 11th hole, then parred his next six holes before three-putting the final green for bogey. He seeks his 13th career PGA TOUR title and first since 2021 Valero Texas Open.

Jon Rahm (73) and Patrick Cantlay (72) sit T60 at even-par after both ended lengthy consecutive par-or-better streaks, 34 rounds for Rahm and 32 rounds for Cantlay.
