Joaquin Niemann chasing much more than a win at Genesis Invitational

Joaquin Niemann (1st) 194 (-19) set a 54-hole scoring record at The Genesis Invitational (previous: 196, Mike Weir/2004, Dustin Johnson/2017, Justin Thomas/2019) and ties his career-low 54-hole total (2021 Sony Open in Hawaii).

He reached 21-under after an eagle at No. 10 from 22’ 2” before making bogeys at Nos. 12 and 15.

Will become the first wire-to-wire winner at The Genesis Invitational since Charlie Sifford in 1969; most recent wire-to-wire winner on the PGA Tour: Nick Taylor/2020 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Niemann seeks to eclipse the 72-hole tournament record of 264 (-20) set by Lanny Wadkins in 1985; at 37 years, marks the longest-standing 72-hole record of any active TOUR event since 1980.

The three-stroke lead ties the largest 54-hole lead of the season (Talor Gooch/The RSM Classic, Taylor Pendrith/Butterfield Bermuda Championship).

He holds 54-hole lead/co-lead for third time on PGA Tour (2019 A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier/Won, 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic/T2).

Leads the field with 22 birdies or better through 54 holes; ties his career-best total
Making fourth consecutive start at The Genesis Invitational (T44/2019, MC/2020, T43/2021).

Earned his first career Tour victory at the 2019 A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. Has two top-10s in seven starts this season (T5/World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, T6/Farmers Insurance Open.

Cameron Young (2nd/-16) retained his second-place position following a 69 that included four birdies; double bogey at the par-3 16th ended a bogey-free streak of 48 holes (No. 3/R1).

Seeks to become the first PGA Tour rookie to win since Garrick Higgo (2021 Palmetto Championship at Congaree).

Leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (+8.008) and Driving Distance (313.8) through three rounds.

Sitting T61 through Round One after an even-par 71, Viktor Hovland (3rd/-13) rebounded with 64-65, included going 14-under in his last 38 holes, to move him into solo third through three rounds. He finished T5 in his Genesis Invitational debut in 2021 and has one win on the 2021-22 season at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.

Justin Thomas (4th/-12) was 1-over through 13 holes but birdied Nos. 17 and 18 to finish with a 70; his largest final-round comeback is four strokes (2016 CIMB Classic, 2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational); runner-up in 2019 marks his best career result at The Genesis Invitational in seven previous appearances.

After bogeys on his first two holes (Nos. 1 and 2), Collin Morikawa (5th/-11) played his final 16 holes in 5-under and without a bogey; will become World No. 1 with a victory if Jon Rahm (T60/-1) finishes outside solo fourth.

Defending champion Max Homa (T6/-10) holed an eagle putt from 61’ 0” en route to a 67; converted 125’ 11” of putts in round three; seeks third consecutive top-five at The Genesis Invitational (T5/2020, Won/2021).
