Campillo, who started the day two shots off the pace, delivered four birdies on the front nine and another on the back, in a bogey-free round at Mission Hills Haikou.
The Spaniard navigated his second outing on the Blackstone Course in style, making the most of calmer conditions than what he battled yesterday to reduce the deficit and put himself in prime position at the 54-hole mark.
The 39-year-old will look to add to his three DP World Tour victories come Sunday.
American Gumberg, having held the lead after day one, continued his solid form to card a 69.
The 30-year-old opened his round with three consecutive birdies. He picked up a further three shots – one on the front nine and two on the back – to help offset bogeys at the 5th, 10th and 17th and keep him atop of the leaderboard.
His attention now shifts to Sunday, where he will aim to secure his second DP World Tour title.
The pair’s playing partner in Dylan Frittelli posted a six under par round of 66 to maintain third position, the South African delivering five birdies and a bogey on his front nine before picking up another two shots on his way home.

Player quotes
Jorge Campillo: It was nice, I played solid. I got off to a really good start, and then the back nine, I think it’s a little tougher. I didn’t hit the driver as good as I did the first two days, but I managed to put the ball in play.
The irons were good, and the putting was just average. I made some good putts, also missed some good opportunities, so overall it was a good day. Bogey-free is always nice. It wasn’t very windy at first but you still have to hit some good shots, you still have some tough shots and holes out there, so it’s not an easy course if you don’t hit it good.
It’s quite exciting, I’m in the position you want to be. It’s going to be a tough day. Dylan played really good today, also Jordan did, so it was a good match and hopefully tomorrow we can have the same match and I win.
