Marked the second playoff of the 2021-22 PGA Tour season (Hideki Matsuyama defeated Russell Henley after one hole at the Sony Open in Hawaii).

It marked the 18th playoff in event history and first since Jason Day defeated Alex Noren and Ryan Palmer in 2018.
Zalatoris was seeking his first Tour title in his 40th start at the site of his first professional start on Tour.
2015, 2018 champion Jason Day was looking to become the first player to win three times at the same venue since the 2014-15 Tour season.

2017 tournament champion Jon Rahm came up just shy of becoming the first player to win on Tour while ranked as World No. 1 since Dustin Johnson (2020 Masters Tournament).
After opening with a double bogey, Korea’s Sungjae Im carded a 71 to finish T6, his first top-10 at the event in his fourth start.
