Mammoth eagle putt highlights Cantlay’s march at BMW C’ship

Defending FedExCup champion and 2021 BMW Championship winner Patrick Cantlay (1st/-12) fired a 6-under 65 to share the low round of the day, highlighted by holing a 104-yard approach shot for eagle at the par-5 14th.

This marked his fourth 54-hole lead/co-lead in individual stroke-play events, converting two of the previous three into victory (2021 TOUR Championship/Won with FedExCup Starting Strokes, 2021 BMW Championship/Won, 2020 Shriners Children’s Open/T8). He also held 54-hole lead/co-lead with teammate Xander Schauffele en route to 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans win.

No player has successfully defended his BMW Championship title since the tournament became a FedExCup Playoffs event in 2007; Nick Price (1993, 1994) was the last to win this event in back-to-back years.

Four players have successfully defended a title this season, the most in a season since 2016-17 (4).

Cantlay seeks to become the first player to win any FedExCup Playoffs event in back-to-back fashion since the FedExCup Playoffs were introduced in 2007.

Entered the week No. 7 in the FedExCup; no player has won the FedExCup back-to back and victory would mark his first individual PGA TOUR victory this season.

Has reached the season-finale TOUR Championship four times in the last five seasons (2020/34th).

Entered the week with 10 top-10 finishes this season, his most in a single season on TOUR and tied for most this season with Matt Fitzpatrick (T47/E)

Schauffele (T2/-11) seeks his eighth TOUR victory, fourth this season and second FedExCup Playoffs event (2017 TOUR Championship).

A win at the BMW Championship would mark his fourth TOUR title in his last 10 starts: 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans (with teammate Patrick Cantlay), Travelers Championship, Genesis Scottish Open.

Only player to make two eagles this week (No. 17/R2, No. 3/R3); hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation and had 29 putts in each of the first three rounds.

Scott Stallings (T2/-11) entered the week No. 46 in the FedExCup standings and is projected to move to No. 16.

In his 12th season on TOUR has advanced to the FedExCup Playoffs in nine of 11 seasons prior but has never advanced to the season-finale TOUR Championship.

Owns a career-high six top-10s this season, with his most recent coming in consecutive starts at Travelers Championship (T8), John Deere Classic (T4) and Rocket Mortgage Classic (T10).

A final-hole birdie for World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (T4/-10) marked his 17th birdie this week, the most of any player in the field.

Adam Scott (T4/-10) now has 96 sub-70 scores in the FedExCup Playoffs, the second-most of any player (most: 98, Dustin Johnson).
