Pawan Kumar will be eyeing his best finish on the Asian Development Tour, and should he pull it off on Friday of the Gurugram Challenge, he can look back with fondness.

It will be about the result, of course, but also about what triggered Day 2’s runaway 9-under 63 at the Classic Golf and Country Club.

Level-par in the opening round here, Pawan was aware, given the course conditions, he needed to go deep to make cut. “The plan was to hit 18 GIR (greens in regulation),” said Pawan. He fell short by one, quite like when he shot a seven-under 63 in Round 2 of the 2018 CG Open in Mumbai.

The setting was quite the same, then and now. Going with the strategy of playing safe, Pawan floundered and stumbled to three-over 73. Hence, the rearguard action which led to that low round. Here too, the sedate start activated an aggressive streak, and given that the stakes are higher here, the urge was greater.

Now that he has shifted gear, the endeavor will be to carry on in the same vein. All he hopes is for the putts to roll in on the morrow.
