History against Rory McIlroy, but Sunday could ring in a change

The final grouping in R4 of the RBC Canadian Open makes for impressive reading. Tony Finau, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas have 37 PGA TOUR wins between them, three FedExCup titles, six Majors, and average OWGR of 10.7.

Defending champion and two-time FedExCup winner McIlroy would move into a tie for 31st on the all-time PGA TOUR wins list with 21 if he wins on Sunday.

Finau tied his career-low score (62) to move into a tie for the lead at 11-under.

Thomas recorded his 19th score of 63 or better since joining the PGA TOUR, most of any player in that span.

World No. 1 and FedExCup leader Scottie Scheffler carded a 1-over 71 and fell to T29.

McIlroy (T1/-11) has never successfully defended a PGA TOUR title (0-for-14 to date; three top-fives in those 14 starts, including a solo-5th at the Wells Fargo Championship in May).

He is the second defending champion this season to hold the 54-hole lead/co-lead (Viktor Hovland/World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba).

Three players since World War II have successfully defended the RBC Canadian Open title: Jim Ferrier (1951), Jim Furyk (2007) and Jhonattan Vegas (2017).

He held the 54-hole lead at the 2019 RBC Canadian Open before tying his career-low with a final-round 61 (won by 7).

Rory has multiple titles in five PGA TOUR seasons to date (2012, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2018-19).

There are five multiple winners this season: Scottie Scheffler (4), Sam Burns (3), Hideki Matsuyama (2), Cameron Smith (2), Max Homa (2).

Finau is 0-for-4 with the 54-hole lead/co-lead on TOUR (5th/2018 U.S. Open, P2/2018 WGC-HSBC Champions, P2/2020 WM Phoenix Open, 4th/2021 American Express).

Tied his career-low nine-hole score with a front-nine 29 (second instance; first: front, R2, 2020 American Express).

He has fop-fives in two of his last four starts on TOUR (T2/Mexico Open at Vidanta, T4/Charles Schwab Challenge). One top-10 in four prior starts at the RBC Canadian Open (T5/2017).

Thomas (T3/-9) recorded a 7-under 63, his 19th round of 63 or better since joining the PGA TOUR at the start of the 2014-15 season (most of any player in that span; second-most: 13, Kevin Na and Jordan Spieth).

Sam Burns (T3/-9) can tie Scheffler for most PGA TOUR wins this season with four. The last time two players won four or more times in a season: 2016-17 (Justin Thomas/5, Dustin Johnson/4).
