Sam Burns last man standing at Valspar C’ship after huge playoff putt

Sam Burns made a 32-foot, 6-inch birdie putt on the second playoff hole (No. 16) to defeat Davis Riley to win the Valspar Championship, becoming the event’s fourth multiple winner and the second to successfully defend (Paul Casey/2019).

The Valspar Championship is the first event with two consecutive back-to-back winners since the CIMB Classic (Ryan Moore/2013-14, Justin Thomas/2015-16).

Burns earned his third PGA Tour title in his 97th start at the age of 25 years, 7 months, 25 days. Burns becomes the fourth multiple winner of the season.

Burns wins the fourth playoff of the season and at the Valspar Championship.

54-hole leader Riley finished a career-best runner-up; 54-hole leaders/co-leaders fail to win any of the four events of the 2022 Florida Swing.

Three of the five past Valspar Championship winners who made the cut this week finish inside the top 10: Burns (won), Adam Hadwin (T7), Kevin Streelman (T7).

Burns’ Tour wins (3): 2021 & 2022 Valspar Championship, 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Improves playoff record to 1-1 (lost to Abraham Ancer at the 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational).

Earned 500 points and moved to No. 2 in the FedExCup standings.

Becomes the fourth multiple winner this season, joining Hideki Matsuyama, Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Smith. Marked the third consecutive week with a player winning for the second time this season (Scheffler, Smith, Burns).

Joined Paul Casey (2019) as the only players to successfully defend a title at the Valspar Championship.

In bid to become the first player to win the Valspar Championship in his debut appearance since Gary Woodland in 2011, Riley (P2/-17) finished career-best runner-up (previous-best finish was T7 at the 2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship).
