Sam Ryder the man to catch at Farmers Insurance Open

Sam Ryder (1st/-12) holds the 36-hole lead/co-lead for the first time in his 147th start on the PGA TOUR; was T2 twice after 36 holes in individual events, eventually finishing fifth at the 2018 Cadence Bank Houston Open and T8 at the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship.

His three-stroke lead at the Farmers Insurance Open ties the second-largest 36-hole lead this season (4 strokes/Tony Finau/Cadence Bank Houston Open).

He has one top-10 in five prior starts at the Farmers Insurance Open (T10/2021); one top-10 in nine starts during the 2022-23 season (T8/World Wide Technology Championship).

Is a two-time runner-up on TOUR (T2/2018 John Deere Classic, T2/2021 Corales Puntacana Championship).

With a win, would become first player since J.J. Spaun (2022 Valero Texas Open) to win on TOUR after victories on PGA TOUR Canada and the Korn Ferry Tour.

Three-time TOUR winner Brendan Steele (2nd/-9) seeks first top-10 in 11th appearance at this event; T17 in his tournament debut in 2011 marks his best result at this event; T18 at the THE CJ CUP in South Carolina marks his best finish in seven starts this season.

PGA TOUR rookie Tano Goya (3rd/-7), making his 14th TOUR start and ninth this season, has yet to post a top-25 result on TOUR; best finish came last week at The American Express (T26); Argentine owns one win on the DP World Tour (2009 Madeira Islands Open).

TOUR rookie Taylor Montgomery (T4/-6) looks to collect his ninth top-15 finish in his 10th start this season (T57/Cadence Bank Houston Open); finished T11 at this event in 2022 and T57 at the 2021 U.S. Open played at Torrey Pines (South).

First-round co-leader Brent Grant (T4/-6) included a triple-bogey (7) at No. 14 on the South Course en route 2-over 74.

Sahith Theegala’s (T4/-6) even-par 72 on the South Course ended his streak of 14 consecutive under-par scores on TOUR.

With a win, Fortinet Championship winner Max Homa (T4/-6) would join Jon Rahm as the second multiple winner this season in as many weeks.

Rookie Sam Stevens (T4/-6) made cut in back-to-back starts for the first time this season (67th/The American Express).

Rookie Vincent Norrman (T4/-6) had made two cuts in seven starts on TOUR before advancing to the third round at Torrey Pines – his first event (T36/2022 Fortinet Championship) and his most recent start (T54/The American Express).

After sitting T116 following an opening-round 73, Jon Rahm (T14/-4) shot a 5-under 67 to extend the longest active cuts-made streak on TOUR (22); last missed cut: 2021 Fortinet Championship; eagle on the par-5 fifth hole (NC) marked his ninth eagle at the Farmers Insurance Open, the most of any player since 2017.

Defending champion Luke List (T24/-2) followed a first-round 67 with 75 (SC); last player to successfully defend his title at the event: Tiger Woods (won four consecutive from 2005 to 2008).
