Hovland in lead but stakes higher for Scheffler as World No 1 tag looms

Defending champion Viktor Hovland extended his lead to three strokes over 2021 runner-up Scottie Scheffler entering the final round of the Hero World Challenge.

Scheffler would return to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking with a win.

Defending champion Hovland (1st/-13) recorded an 8-under 64, his lowest score in seven career rounds at the event.

Made 10 birdies, including six on the final eight holes; career-high in official PGA TOUR events: nine (twice).

Won the 2021 Hero World Challenge in his tournament debut by one stroke over Scheffler.

Has held the 54-hole lead/co-lead in three official individual stroke-play events on the PGA TOUR (2-for-3): 2020 Puerto Rico Open (Won), 2021 World Wide Technology Championship (Won), 2022 Open Championship (T4).

Scheffler (T2/-10) carded a 6-under 66, highlighted by an eagle-3 at No. 15; there have been two eagles at No. 15 this week and Scheffler has made both of them.

He finished runner-up at the 2021 Hero World Challenge in his tournament debut.

Has two top-10s in three starts on TOUR during the fall portion of the 2022-23 season (T3/World Wide Technology Championship, T9/Cadence Bank Houston Open).

Justin Thomas (T3/-8) recorded a 6-under 66, highlighted by an eagle-2 at No. 7; Thomas has played 38 consecutive holes without a bogey or worse.

Cameron Young (T3/-8) is one of seven players in the field making his tournament debut; Young recorded five runner-up finishes on TOUR last season and was voted PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year.

Kevin Kisner recorded a hole-in-one at the par-3 12th.
