Scottie Scheffler survives battle of nerves to breakthrough on PGA Tour

Scottie Scheffler won the WM Phoenix Open on the third playoff hole (par-4 18th), draining a 25’ 7” birdie putt to edge Patrick Cantlay to earn his first PGA Tour victory in his 71st career start.

Scheffler became the third consecutive first-time winner of the season and the fifth overall; is the 13th first-time winner in tournament history and first since Brooks Koepka in 2015.

Cantlay, a six-time PGA Tour winner, finished runner-up for the sixth time.

Sahith Theegala fell to 0-for-2 on the PGA Tour with the 54-hole lead.

Scheffler won his first career PGA Tour victory in his 71st start at the age of 25 years, 7 months, 23 days.

Moved to No. 4 in the FedExCup standings; best finish in the FedExCup was a fifth-place finish in 2020.

Won in his third start at the WM Phoenix Open (1st/2022, T7/2021, MC/2020).

Became the fifth first-time winner on Tour this season and third in the last three weeks, joining Luke List and Tom Hoge.

Cantlay has the second-longest current streak of rounds at par or better on Tour (31, two behind Jon Rahm’s 33).

The 2021 FedExCup champion moves to No. 9 in the FedExCup standings.

Fourth top-10 in as many starts this season (4/Sentry Tournament of Champions, 9/The American Express, T4/AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, P2/WM Phoenix Open).

Carlos Ortiz picked up the third hole-in-one of his career with an ace on the par-3 16th with a 9-iron from 178 yards; finishes T33.

Combined with Sam Ryder’s ace on Saturday, marks the first time with multiple holes-in-one on No. 16 in the same week since 1997 (Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker).

Tee shots at No. 16 between the last two holes-in-one: 2,863 (from Francesco Molinari/R3/2015 to Sam Ryder/R3/2022), 33 (from Ryder to Ortiz/R4/2022).
