Rory McIlroy (T5/-5) opened his title defence with a 4-under 66. McIlroy has not successfully defended a title in 14 prior attempts on TOUR (three top-fives in those 14 starts, including a solo-fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship in May).

Jonas Blixt (T9/-3) qualified for the U.S. Open via Final Qualifying on Monday, earning medallist honours at the Milton, Ontario site (RattleSnake Point Golf Club). Blixt, a three-time PGA TOUR winner, entered the week with two starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension and needs 237 FedExCup points to retain full status for the remainder of the season (2-way T2 or better).
