Like his demeanour, Yashas Chandra’s progress often goes under the radar. But it is growth alright, especially if one were to take the recent past into consideration.
The soft spoken engineer-turned-pro teed off at PGTI’s Tour Championship in December on the back of four missed cuts. But he stemmed the slide in Jamshedpur in a way that has aided the solid start to the current season.

The top-8 in the season-ender came in a while, and Yashas attributes it to capping a no-no during a tournament week. Being a feel player, “I was trying to rectify the swing on course.” It resulted in complicating matters, which did not help.

Simplifying things did. Add to it the work during off-season with coach Laurence Brotheridge on the swing and other aspects, and the benefits are on show. In four starts this season, Yashas has two top-10s, including his first on the Asian Tour in last week’s The DGC Open.

The start to the Gurugram Challenge look promising too, with the lanky golfer six off the lead after an opening 3-under 69.
A blueprint has been prepared by student and coach and if things don’t go to plan, Yashas just needs to refer to it for simple solutions. “The idea is to go in with just one or two thoughts.”
