Returning to ‘basics’ paying off for Akshay Sharma

Not among the longer ball strikers on PGTI, the desire for some distance has always stayed with Akshay Sharma. So, after the culmination of last season, Akshay tried out a new set of irons, and watching the ball land at least 20 yards ahead of what he is known to hit was obviously pleasing.

Armed with the new clubs, Akshay teed off in 2022 in hope. But practice and tournaments are two ends of a prism and Akshay was in a for a reality check in no time. The string of missed cuts from January to April was about poor ball control.

Akshay went into the break with plenty of food for thought. After much deliberations, he returned to the old specifications and is clawing his way back. Regaining his due place on Tour hasn’t been easy but the starts in Chennai and Jammu signal a move in the right direction.

This week too at the Jaipur Open is on desired lines as Akshay opened with a flawless 5-under 70. Three off the lead, the endeavour will be to further quell the past, but taking care to keep with learnings.
