As the action was starting to unfold at the Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational on Thursday, Daksh Shokeen was beginning his day in Gurgaon without an inkling of what was about to unfold.

A reserve for this week at the Chandigarh Golf Club, Daksh received a call on the possibility of defending champion Shiv Kapur withdrawing with a back injury and if he could make it here before noon. There was hope but no certainty that he would tee off, yet Daksh wanted to take this slight opportunity to its logical conclusion.

From 6am to noon, Daksh experienced an adrenaline rush like never before, visualising each hole while driving at 120kmph!!!!

A father’s unflinching belief in his boy

Amrit Lal has been through a lot of late, to the extent that he came close to quitting golf. A thumb injury, problems with his employers, Amrit would not have been teeing off on on the PGTI  had it not been for the unflinching belief of father Sucha Singh that his son is a fighter.

It is courtesy this belief and Sucha Singh’s understanding of golf that helped Amrit heal physically and mentally.

Back on the road, Amrit has a realistic chance of a breakthrough win this week. Four shots off the lead, Amrit will keep at the task, and should he win on Sunday, it will be a fitting reward for his father’s untiring work.

New mindset + hot putter = success for Abhijit Chadha

Abhijit Chadha’s success of late has been because of the calming influence at home, and of course the solid support of staying in a joint family.

Married to Ankita Tiwana, a former lady pro, the couple has made a concerted effort to draw clear lines on what gets discussed at home on tournament weeks. A good or bad day on the golf course is treated alike, with a level head, since the understanding is there is a world outside golf.

What is also working for Abhijit this week and helped him switch off after the round is the excitement of watching his sister’s wedding preparations. A free mind is the ideal combination for a hot putter, as is apparent from Abhijit’s top perch on the leaderboard.

The other side of the fence

It is only appropriate that we get to know both sides of the coin. If Abhijit’s changed persona is responsible for his new approach to golf, the person who has been the catalyst should also be heard out.
