Honey Baisoya has had his share of troubles before and the win at the 2021 J&K Open in Srinagar. This week, he defends the title at the Jammu Tawi Golf Course.

Honey Baisoya wasn’t ready and neither did he anticipate what lay ahead when he teed off for the J&K Open in Srinagar last year.

A string of injuries and missed cuts on the Professional Golf Tour of India followed him to Tee 1 of the Royal Springs Golf Course, but to his surprise, all components of his game seemed to come together from the first day. Once Honey shot a 6-under on the penultimate day, he knew the tournament could be his.

“I know how to play the leader group,” he said, and proof lies in the high conversion rate over the years. The win, his seventh and first in almost three-and-half-years, was a huge respite but in no way an end to the struggles. The hitting was off soon after, and it stayed that way, and Honey was back to fighting for the cut line.

But in this lay learning, and among them was that he did need another pair of eyes to see where he was going wrong. It was a long-standing advice from peers and friends that he should see a coach but the ‘feel player’ in Honey prevented him from acting on this.

“I was apprehensive that a coach might change my swing too much,” he says. Senior pro Deepinder Kullar is the man on the job, and Honey can list the benefits of their brief association, among them is the form.

“With DP sir, I’m a lot more aware technically. If there’s a week of bad hitting, I know exactly how to get back.” Now this is a break from the troubled past and bodes well as Honey is ready to defend the J&K Open at a new venue in Jammu.
