SSP’s unique equation with India’s Steel City Jamshedpur

Given his memories on the golf courses in Jamshedpur, SSP Chawrasia considers India's Steel City his second home.
Given his memories on the golf courses in Jamshedpur, SSP Chawrasia considers India's Steel City his second home.

This is a throwback in time. When SSP Chawrasia drove into Jamshedpur from Kolkata the week of the Tata Steel Tour Championship in mid December last year, the sights and sounds seemed all so familiar.

With time, the ‘Steel City of India’ feels almost like home and this is surely where the heart is. With time, some of SSP’s biggest moments on the domestic tour have come here with a tinge of uniqueness.

The current times call for social distancing, but call it a charm or challenge, turning out here always has meant teeing off at two golf courses — Beldih and Golmuri.

For SSP, boarding a bus or whatever means are available between the two venues stands out as do the three titles at the Tata Open in 2003, 2005 and 2006. The record is enviable and SSP is in a two-man club with Mukesh Kumar.

Had it not been for the sole second at the 2019 Tata Steel Tour Championship on the Professional Golf Tour of India, SSP could have been in a league of his own.

He was hoping to go one better this time, but the T4 meant the wait has got longer. Never mind, patience is a trait SSP possesses in ample quantity and the time will come when he comes away victororius from the 18th green.

Till then, SSP is happy to soak in the fond memories the city holds.
