Amardeep Malik is deep at work as he prepares for the PGTI to restart next month. Amid the rigorous practice sessions, Amardeep paused for a while on Sunday to celebrate an achievement, which took a while to come but happened at last.

Pupil Lavanya Gupta, 15, did her “mentor” proud by mounting the podium at the US Kids World Teens Championship in Pinehurst late on Saturday.

Like his golf shots, Amardeep chose his words carefully. Terming himself a “mentor not coach”, who helps “young athletes step up to the next level”, Amardeep put into perspective Lavanya’s T3 finish and the toil and work put in the past two-plus years.

Lavanya, who trains at the DLF Academy under coach Deepinder Kullar, hits it long; Amardeep calls her “one of the longest hitters in the country in her age category.

The success in Pinehurst is sweeter since it comes on the back of several ups and down. But Lavanya stayed steadfast, and with solid family support, the aim was to keep getting better. Results started to trickle in when she started to travel more at home and abroad for tournaments.

With a three-day total of 213 in Pinehurst, the final day 4-under 68, which equaled Saturday’s best card, is a source of pride for Lavanya, and Amardeep is certain the result is a sign of the time to come.
