With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 entering its third week, the raised eyebrows about the predicament of the big teams, Mumbai Indians (MI) in particular, are getting progressively higher. With the most successful IPL franchise still a distance away from any points on the IPL 2022 league table, people are beginning to wonder what has gone wrong.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the defending champions and one of the most effective teams, too has been in a massive struggle but at least they are off the bottom of the table with a pretty convincing win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last game.

But that still doesn’t make for too flattering a reading. With just two points from five games, CSK isn’t in the reckoning yet. But never say never with the yellow brigade.

On top of the table are Rajasthan Royals, with six points from four matches and a Nett Run-Rate of 0.951. This NRR could become critical as there are now six sides with six points apiece and the run-rate could become critical when it comes to the final qualifiers.
Among the top six are the two new sides, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans. While LSG, led by KL Rahul, seem to have found their feet quickly. GT, after three successive wins, lost their way against Punjab Kings (PBKS), who also seem to have found their processes for the tournament.

That apart, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and RCB are keeping themselves in the race, though both sides would love to be more consistent.
Off the six-point chart are Delhi Capitals (DC), SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), CSK and MI.
Of these, DC and SRH have shown some promise. One begins to wonder if the credentials or skills of the captains and coaching staff will become an issue as IPL 2022 progresses. SRH have everything they need in their coaching arsenal – names like Tom Moody, Muttiah Muralitharan and Brian Lara – but the results aren’t so great.

DC are coached by Ricky Ponting, but even they would be keen to get better.
Still a long way to go in IPL 2022, but teams like MI and CSK, so used to success, would be wondering, what next. Not such a pretty picture for either, but the only way out for them is up, so keep an eye on both.
