Lionel Messi on his way out from Barcelona: It is official

Lionel Messi is leaving FC Barcelona
Lionel Messi's long association with FC Barcelona is finally coming to an end.

The financial and structural obstacles have compelled Argentine football great Lionel Messi and Spanish football giants LaLiga to part ways. The club and its iconic striker for 17 years though in principle had agreed to stay together.

Manchester City and Paris-Saint-Germain could be his next destination with with his former boss Pep Guardiola at City or former teammate and friend Neymar at PSG.

FC Barcelona confirmed the unwarranted development in a post on its official Instagram page. “Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations),” read the post.

As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.

FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life

Contrary to all speculation about his exit from the club Messi had agreed to renew his contract with Barca. His previous agreement with the club had expired in June. He was stated a free agent thereafter.

Messi, who joined Barca’s youth set up aged 13, is the club’s all-time top scorer and appearance maker with 672 goals in 778 games in all competitions.

Speculation was also rife last year about Messi quitting the Spanish club over his cold relationship with then president Josep Maria Bartomeu. Albeit, Joan Laporta after taking change from Bartomeu had persuaded Messi to stay with the club.
