The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced the release of Invitation to Tender (ITT) for Media Rights of the Indian Premier League Seasons 2023-2027.
Bids are invited “from reputed entities to acquire the Media Rights for the Indian Premier League Seasons 2023-2027, through a tender process”, BCCI has stated in a Pres note.
The richest cricket governing body in the world, BCCI is eyeing a windfall of up to ₹50,000/ crore ($6 billion approx) from the IPL media rights for the five-year (2023-2027 cycle).
That would amount to a three-fold rights in ₹16,347.5 crore Star Sports had committed for the present five-year cycle for the consolidated IPL rights – all rights across all territories.
For the first time, the IPL media rights have been segregated in four categories – digital, TV, rest of the world and a new package of 18 matches. The collective base price for the different categories is reported to be around ₹ 35,000 crore.
The detailed terms and conditions governing the tender process including eligibility requirements, process for submissions of bids, proposed media rights packages, and obligations, etc. are contained in the ‘Invitation to Tender’ (“ITT”).
The tender document is priced ₹25 lakh, plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax. The ITT will be available for purchase till May 10, 2022.
Any interested party wishing to submit a bid is required to purchase the ITT. However, only those satisfying the eligibility criteria set out in the ITT and subject to the other terms and conditions set out therein, shall be eligible to bid. It is clarified that merely purchasing this ITT does not entitle any person to bid.
BCCI has reserved the right to cancel or amend the bidding process at any stage in any manner at its discretion.
The rights will be allocated via an e-auction with the process expected to begin on June 12.
Reliance-owned Viacom 18 is expected to bid aggressively. Star Sports and Sony TV are likely to be the other key contenders with ZEE being another player. Though the details will be revealed in the tender document, it is expected joint bids will not be allowed.
