India will rest their medal hopes on the likes of Amit Panghal, PV Sindhu, Neeraj Chopra among others at the Tokyo Olympics later this month. Let’s take a look at the six strong medal contenders.
Amit Panghal
Amit Panghal will be competing at the Tokyo Olympics as World Number 1 in men’s flyweight (52kg) category. This Rohtak boy who is also the reigning Asian Games champion is expected to get a good draw.
Bajrang Punia
Bajrang Punia is a freestyle wrestler who will compete in the 65kg weight category. In 2014, he won the silver medal at Commonwealth Games. He is credited with winning three medals in World Championships.
PV Sindhu
A 25-year-old is one of India’s best medal hopefuls. Sindhu was a silver medallist at the Rio Olympics and is the only woman to compete in the women’s single category in badminton. She is improving her game with her South Korean coach Park Tae Sang. In August 2019, she won the World Championship.
Neeraj Chopra
The star javelin thrower is the gold medal winner at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in 2018, and is now hoping to repeat the feat for his country at the Tokyo Olympics. Neeraj Chopra qualified for the Olympics with a throw of 88.07m.
Mary Kom
Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, the much-decorated boxer, is also a member of the Rajya Sabha. She is a six-time winner of the World Amateur Boxing Championship. At the 2012 London Olympics, she won bronze for India.
Saurabh Chaudhury
This promising 19-year-old is a pistol shooter to watch out for. He is entering the Tokyo Olympics as World No 2 in both the 2021 World Rankings and 2020 Tokyo rankings. He will be the youngest Indian to win an Olympic medal if he achieves the feat.
