Novak Djokovic has lined-up himself for yet another Australian Open-like scenario. The top-ranked Serbian has entered the Indian Wells ATP event, slated for March 7 to 20. His name figures in the entries announced on Wednesday. The organisers have asked for an evidence of full vaccination to enter the ground.

Djokovic is a five-time Indiana Wells Champion.

The 33-year-old, 20-time Grand Slam champion was not allowed to defend the Australian Open title over his inoculation status. He was ejected from the tournament and Melbourne after he lost a court room battle despite winning the first round appeal. He was eyeing a fourth consecutive title and a record 21st Grand Slam crown.

This remains to be seen whether the vaccination restriction will only be limited to spectators or also extend to the participants.

Indian Wells have stated that player (vaccination) protocols will be decided by the ATP in line with US restrictions.

“With health and safety as the tournament’s top priority, the BNP Paribas Open will require valid proof of full vaccination to enter the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for the tournament,” it said.

“The guidelines for the players are governed by the protocols established by their respective governing bodies, the WTA and ATP, as well as any restrictions established by the United States of America in regard to the vaccination status of international travelers entering the country.”

In Djokovic’s absence, Rafael Nadal had created the record of 21st Major wins with the Australian Open triumph.

Djokovic is due to return to the tour at the Dubai ATP event from February 21.
