With electric start to Barbasol C’ship, Adam Svensson in elite company

Canada’s Adam Svensson became the third player to begin the Barbasol Championship with a 10-under 62.

As part of the Strategic Alliance with the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour, the field includes the top 50 available players from the DP World Tour priority ranking.

Svensson made two eagles (Nos. 15 and 8) in a round for the second time this season
(R3/RBC Heritage), and third in his career, en route 10-under 62 and a two-stroke lead.

Became the third player in tournament history to begin the event with 62 (Troy Merritt/2018/Won, J.T. Poston/2019/T29).

Entered this week at No. 98 in the FedExCup following top-25s in his last three starts (T21/RBC Canadian Open, T25/Travelers Championship, T24/John Deere Classic).

He owns two top-10s on TOUR, both this season (T7/Sony Open in Hawaii, T9/The Honda Classic). Is making hsi second appearance at the Barbasol Championship (MC/2019).

He finished 167th in the FedExCup as a PGA TOUR rookie in 2018-19 season and failed to regain his card for the 2019-20 season. Returned to the PGA TOUR for the 2021-22 season after winning twice on the Korn Ferry Tour in the expanded 2020-21 Korn Ferry Tour season (2021 Club Car Championship, 2021 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Open). He missed the fully exempt status that comes with winning the Korn Ferry Tour Finals points standings by less than two points.

Has the distinction of being the only player to shoot two rounds of 61 or better during the 2018-19 PGA TOUR season (R1/Sony Open in Hawaii, R2/Wyndham Championship).

Won the 2018 Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Ricardo Gouveia (T2/-8), a 30-year-old from Portugal who played college golf at Lynn University and the University of Central Florida, made his second PGA TOUR start (MC/2016 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard).

He owns five top-10s in his DP World Tour career, including one this season (T7/Dutch Open); five-time Challenge Tour winner ranks T6 on list of players with most Challenge Tour victories.

At World No. 244, Germany’s Matti Schmid (T4/-7) is the highest-ranked among the eight players at 7-under 65, Is making his fifth PGA TOUR start, but first as a professional (MC/2019 The Open, MC/2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational, MC/2021 U.S. Open, T59/2021 The Open). Made six cuts in nine starts on the DP World Tour this season, including a runner-up result at the Dutch Open.
