The ICC T20 World Cup 2021, to be hosted by India, may follow the remaining 31 games of the Indian Premier League in the United Arab. The Board of Control for Cricket in India will complete the second phase of the suspended IPL from September 19 to October 10.
The World Cup, according to an ESPNCricinfo report, will start in the UAE from October 17.
A formal word on the T20 World Cup 2021 is still awaited from the BCCI. However, it is reported that the remaining games of the league stage can be shared between Oman, Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The knockout stage and the deciders will take place in the UAE.
In the first round, 12 matches will be played and the teams will fight it out for four spots in the Super 12s. Four teams from that round from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman and Papua New Guinea will join the top eight T20 International (T20I) sides in the Super 12s.
Matches in the Super 12s phase will be played from October 24 and the teams will be split into two groups of six. The matches will be played across all three venues – Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah – in UAE.
The BCCI will have to confirm to the International Cricket Council on the status of hosting the World Cup in India. With fears of yet another Covid-19 wave looming large and the country still getting over 50,000 fresh cases per day, it is just impossible to host the mega event in India.
Even if the World Cup is shifted to another c0untry, BCCI will retain the status of the World Cup host.
