Sukhman Singh’s journey in golf wasn’t driven by that very common trend of son following in the father’s footsteps. Simarjeet Singh was and continues to be among the country’s top amateurs but the boy got drawn to the sport by the sight of a small white ball getting smacked by a long stick. Perhaps, that is the reason why he likes to rip it off the tee at the Noida Golf Course.
With mother Amanpreet a basketball player of repute in her days, it wasn’t long before the sporting genes in Sukhman got to work. With time and proper nurturing at home, the 15-year-old has notched up quite a few landmarks since his first win at Pahalgam in 2016.

Being crowned the national sub-junior champion at the Eagleton Golf Resort in Bangalore also evokes nostalgia since Simarjeet also recorded a win here in 2002. There is plenty that binds this family of athletes, but uppermost is that there are no shortcuts to success.

As parents, Simarjeet and Amanpreet have silently gone about their task of bringing up an athlete; Sukhman has done his bit with the single-minded devotion towards the goal of aspiring pro on some of the biggest stages in the world.
Never mind if that has meant letting go of a normal childhood dotted with light-hearted banter and activities.
There still is a long way to go but Sukhman with his parents firmly behind him is ready to take the long and often thorny road to possible stardom.
