Cash and rewards are raining for India’s latest and greatest track and field icon Neeraj Chopra. His home State Haryana has announced a cash purse of rupees six crore for the Panipat boy.
Lauding India’s first Olympic medallist in track and field, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has also announced a Class I officer’s job to Chopra. “As per the State Government policy, Chopra will be paid ₹ 6 crore. The State will also recruit him as a Class I officer. We will try to set up a state of the art centre of excellence for athletics in Panchkula. Chopra will head that centre,” said Khattar, taking pride in the achievement of Chopra.
Haryana’s neighbouring State Punjab too has announced a purse of ₹ 2 crore for Chopra, who is also set to receive ₹ 1 crore from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
He is also set to receive ₹ 75 lakh from the Indian Olympic Association. Anand Mahindra will gift the Olympic star an XUV 700, worth more than ₹ 16 lakh.
Chopra on Sunday became the first ever Indian athlete to win an Olympic medal – a gold at that – in track and field events. He is also only the second Indian ever to win an individual medal at the Olympic Games. He accomplished the golden task with a throw of 87.58 meters.

Shooter Abhinav Bindra had won the first ever Individual medal for India at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has also announced cash awards for other medallists from the Tokyo Games.
“Our athletes have made the country proud by finishing on the podium at @Tokyo2020. The @BCCI acknowledges their stellar efforts and we are delighted to announce cash prizes for the medallists,” BCCI honorary secretary Jay Shah announced via a tweet message.
The Indian cricket board, besides the ₹ 1 crore reward to Chopra, will pay ₹ 50 lakh each to silver medallists Mirabai Chanu and Ravi Kumar Dahiya. Bronze medal winners PV Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain and Bajrang Punia will receive ₹ 25 lakh each. The men’s hockey team, which signed off with a bronze – India’s first medal in the sport since the gold at the 1980 Moscow Games, will be awarded ₹ 1.25 crore.
Tokyo 2020 have been the best ever Olympics for India with a seven-medal haul, exceeding Lodon 2012 Games’ six-medal haul.
